Compare and Contrast Class - 1149 Words
There are two main types of class associated with education. These are working and middle class and both of these are very different and have very different views about education. Part of this may be down to the affluence of the area you come from. Taylor, M (2006) says, ââ¬Å"In affluent areas in north London the study would expect 67% of 11 year old to achieve level 5 in nation English test. Children growing in more deprived areas such as Dudley, just 13% are likely to get top level 5 in English.â⬠This puts the north/south divide theory into action, however it also shows that social class does take an effect on the childrenââ¬â¢s attitude to learning. Labeling in primary schools can sometimes be related to class and the background can decideâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Bryant, L. says ââ¬ËSome sociologists believe that class can affect a persons attitude to education.ââ¬â¢ This evidence supports that working class have less of an educational background due to their upbringing and this would then affect the attitude their child would have. If the parent has a canââ¬â¢t be bothered attitude, so would there child and this would come across in class. They would have been brought up in a way in which they donââ¬â¢t know any different and due to the lack of social mobility it would be hard for them to change, especially at such a young age. When children are at Primary level they are easily lead and this can mean either the right way and have a good approach to education or the wrong way and not be bothered. Giddens, A. (2006, p711) states that ââ¬ËDuring process of schooling, children from lower class simply come to see that they are ââ¬Ënot clever enoughââ¬â¢ to expect to get highly paid, or high status jobs.ââ¬â¢ This shows that if children donââ¬â¢t get the correct help from teachers and parents, then they can easily lose motivation and give up, even at a young Primary school level. An influencing factor of this could be labeling which they get from other students, because they are from a lower class background, which could then effect there school work.
